Week One Results:

Rodrigo Guerrero vs. Diego Morales, 10 rounds, 115 pounds
Summary: Both fighters in great shape. Morales got off to a good start, rocking Guerrero backwards in the 2nd round. Guerrero resorted to clinching early and often in order to keep Erik Morales' younger brother off him. Guerrero was effective in the 3rd, landing the jab and some good stuff to the body. Morales landed a nice uppercut in the 4th and did some great work on the inside while Guerrero kept trying to work the jab. More of the same in the 5th and then Morales put Guerrero down with a hook to the jaw in the 6th. Guerrero got up but was dropped a minute later for a second time. Guerrero went into defense mode after that. A hard uppercut put Guerrero down again in the 9th, this time for the ten count.

Alex Baba vs. Tim Austin, 10 rounds, 118 pounds
Summary: Both fighters in top shape. Austin used tremendous ring generalship to pile up the points against Baba, moving in and out and landing solid combinations at will. Round eight saw Baba make a visit to the canvas courtesy of a short hook inside from Austin. Baba walked into a combination in the 9th to go down a second time. Baba was out on his feet and Austin flurried, earning a TKO with a second left in the 9th.

Luisito Espinosa vs. Manuel Medina, 10 rounds, 126 pounds
Summary: Both fighters in top shape. Both guys traded moments of landing big shots but neither guy sustained much momentum, it was constantly back and forth between the two. Medina was the more consistent however. Espinosa closed the show well, winning the 9th and 10th without question. It still wasn't enough as Medina prevailed via an ultra tight unanimous decision by scores of 96-95 twice an 96-94.

Frankie Randall vs. Emanuel Augustus, 10 rounds, 140 pounds
Summary: Both guys in great shape. Augustus proved off the bat he showed up to win, taking the fight to The Surgeon from the opening bell. Once Randall settled in, he gained control of the bout and slowed the pace down, countering Augustus nicely. The gap in power proved difficult for Augustus to overcome as he was unable to keep Randall honest. Augustus did some awesome work, but his punches just weren't having much effect. Round six saw Augustus sustain a bad cut. Augustus managed to keep the fight close, Randall wasn't running away with it. That is, until Randall dropped Augustus in round eight with a short hook. From that point it was all Randall, but Augustus gamely made it to the bell. Scores were 99-90, 98-92, and a too close 95-94 for Randall.

Julian Jackson vs. Bronco McKart, 10 rounds, 154 pounds
Summary: Both guys at their best. McKart definitely proved his toughness, hanging in with Jackson despite eating brutal punishment. Round six saw McKart kiss the canvas but he was able to make it to his feet. McKart did his best to rally but was just too beaten up and Jackson walked to a decision win by scores of 98-89 twice and 97-90.

Summary: Jackson in great shape, Abraham undertrained. Jackson surprised Abraham early, landing a monstrous combination that put the Armenian down in a heap. Abraham barely beat the count and survived to the first bell. Abraham took the 2nd round to recuperate, but found his bearings in the 3rd and got back in the mix. Both guys were in trouble at various points in an all-action 5th round. Abraham's face began to swell and Jackson was in control at this stage and never relinquished it, earning a wide decision by scores of 98-91, 97-92, and 96-93.

Wladimir Klitschko vs. Tommy Morrison, 10 rounds, heavyweights
Summary: Both in great shape. Wladimir put Morrison down in the first minute but was unable to finish him. It didn't take him long to put Morrison down again as he visited the canvas in the 3rd. The knockdown was so devastating it is a wonder how Morrison got up. Round four saw a slowed pace as Morrison was able to regain himself. A right cross from Morrison caught Wladimir by surprise and opened up a massive gash outside the right eyebrow. Referee Raul Caiz Sr. took a look at the cut and allowed it to continue. At this point, both fighters exchanged brutal uppercuts, and again he takes a look at Wladimir's cut. The fight was allowed to continue and Morrison immediately landed a hard combination that forced a gushing of blood out of the cut. Another cut was opened up, this time inside the mouth of Wladimir, and the cut was so severe that Caiz Sr. had to stop the fight, giving Morrison an unlikely come from behind upset victory!

Summary: Hernandez in great shape, Camacho undertrained. Hernandez got off to a good start but Camacho worked himself into the fight, dropping Hernandez with a hard shot in the 4th round. Hernandez survived and didn't allow the knockdown to keep him from trying to work, but he was just in a bit over his head. Camacho walked to a decision, winning by scores of 99-89 twice and 98-90.

Welcome Ncita vs. Kennedy McKinney, 10 rounds, 122 pounds
Summary: In a rematch of two obscure but awesome bouts from the 1990s, Ncita got off to the better start. The bout didn't quite live up to the kind of action their first two were known for. Ncita's best work was in an 8th round that he had McKinney nearly out on his feet. But it was just a round later that McKinney opened up a bad gash over the right eyelid of Ncita, and it was enough to get the bout stopped almost immediately by referee Mike Ortega. Ncita was ahead 79-73, 79-74, and 78-75 at the time the fight was stopped, giving McKinney a big win.

Felix Trinidad vs. Buddy McGirt, 10 rounds, 147 pounds
Summary: Both fighters in top shape. Trinidad got right after McGirt, who was able to counter the Puerto Rican nicely throughout the early goings. McGirt's movement proved problematic for Trinidad. McGirt buzzed Tito in the 5th round. McGirt began to clinch a bit often after he felt he had control of the action, which frustrated Trinidad. Trinidad finally got going in the 8th round, hurting a slowed McGirt to the body a couple of times. McGirt went back to making it an ugly fight, likely winning the last two rounds. It was enough to get McGirt a unanimous decision with scores of 97-93 and 96-94 twice. The win locked up the victory for Mario's team.

Nonito Donaire vs. Jorge Arce, 12 rounds, 112 pounds
Summary: Both fighters in great shape. Donaire and Arce engaged in a nice little battle. Each guy had more than their fair share of moments and often took turns winning rounds. Donaire separated himself a bit by dropping Arce in the 7th with a hard hook. Arce was up at the count of eight but took a pounding until finally the referee saved El Travieso from further punishment.

Ricardo Lopez vs. Saman Sorjaturong, 12 rounds, 108 pounds
Summary: Lopez undertrained, Sorjaturong in top shape. In a battle of two of the highest skilled junior flyweights, Lopez just looked a class above. He hurt Sorjaturong early, put him down in the 4th. Sorjaturong answered in the 5th with a monster round but Lopez righted the ship quickly, marching to a unanimous decision. Scores were 117-110 twice and 116-110.

Pernell Whitaker vs. Jose Luis Castillo, 12 rounds, 135 pounds
Summary: Whitaker overtrained, Castillo in top shape. Whitaker got off to a great start, winning 3 of the first 4 rounds before putting Castillo down in the 5th with a monster uppercut. Castillo woke up in the 7th but Sweet Pea rallied later in the round to possibly steal it. Whitaker was just too far superior for Castillo, who hangs in there with most of the top 135 pounders. In the end, Whitaker ran away with a decision by scores of 118-109, 117-110, 116-111.

Carl Froch vs. Nigel Benn, 12 rounds, 168 pounds
Summary: Both fighters in top shape. In this all British showdown, neither guy gained an advantage until midway through the fight. Froch had a monster 3rd round but Benn answered in kind in the 4th. Benn kept it going his way in the 5th and 6th, outworking Froch on the inside and outhustling him in general. A shot to the jaw of Froch put him down in the 7th. Benn followed that up by dropping Froch again in the 8th twice with uppercuts. Froch walked into a hook in the 9th and went down again. Froch somehow survived into the 12th round, where out of absolutely NOWHERE he put Benn on the canvas! Benn got up and committed a foul in order to avoid going down again, which cost him an additional point. It ultimately wasn't enough as Benn easily won on points by scores of 114-107, 114-106, and 113-107.

Chad Dawson vs. Michael Spinks, 15 rounds, 175 pounds
Summary: Both fighters in top shape. Dawson surprised everyone by hanging tough with Spinks, winning some of the early rounds while Spinks got himself into the fight. Spinks surged in the middle rounds, picking up a lot of ground as well as the lead on the scorecards. Dawson found some success in the 10th by working from the outside with his jab. Spinks scored the only knockdown of the bout in the 14th, dropping Dawson with a hook he didn't see coming. It was just additional padding to Spinks' lead, which wound up being scorecards that read 146-141, 146-139, 145-140.

Final Tally: Mario Ortega wins 10-5 over Ramon Aranda
Summary: Both fighters are in top shape. In this battle of less famous brothers, Montiel got off to a solid start, dropping Hussein for a short count in round two. Hussein responded by dusting himself off and beating down Montiel in round three. Hussein kept the momentum going his way into the 4th, but was warned for a low blow to end the round. Montiel showed little of anything until waking up in round seven with a short rally. Montiel went back to inactivity in the 8th, finally picking up the pace in the final two rounds. It was too little, too late, however, and Hussein picked up a tight decision win with scores of 96-93 and 95-94 twice.

Gustavo Ballas vs. Martin Castillo, 10 rounds, 115 pounds
Summary: In a sometimes tactical, sometimes brutal affair, neither guy enjoyed an advantage for more than a round at a time early on. Halfway through, it was anybody's fight, with Ballas doing the better technical work and Castillo getting it done on the inside. Ballas finally found some separation by dominating rounds seven and eight. Ballas kept it going into the final stanzas, dropping Castillo with no time left in the 10th. Ballas would prevail via 97-92 scores on all three cards.

Abner Mares vs. Lupe Pintor, 10 rounds, 118 pounds
Summary: Both fighters entered in tip-top shape. Pintor edged the opening salvo, then opened up a cut on Mares forehead with an intentional headbutt in the 2nd. Mares fought with a sense of urgency, winning the 3rd round before the cut was reopened in the 4th, this time from a punch. The cut was ruled too severe for Mares to continue, and Pintor picked up a TKO.

Chris John vs. Bobby Chacon, 10 rounds, 126 pounds
Summary: Chacon entered the fight wildly out of fighting shape while John was at his best. John took advantage of Chacon's sluggishness, even dropping Chacon with a short hook inside in the 4th round. Knowing how dangerous Chacon can be when hurt, John took his foot off the gas and allowed Chacon to regain himself and work himself back into the fight. Round seven was action packed, with John getting buzzed early and then coming on late in the round. Chacon suffered a bad gash in round eight and it quickly reopened in the 9th, and the fight was immediately stopped, giving John the TKO win. Scores had John narrowly ahead 77-75 through eight complete rounds.

Michael Katsidis vs. Shane Mosley, 10 rounds, 135 pounds
Summary: Both fighters with impressive physiques. Mosley took his time to begin and then quickly opened up a bad gash above the left eye of Katsidis and doesn't look good for the Aussie. Katsidis knows the situation and decides to go for it and actually finds success landing some heavy thudding shots in rounds three and four. Round five was one for the ages as both guys got in their share of quality licks. Ultimately, the cut would prove costly and Katsidis was deemed unable to continue midway through round six, getting Mosley a victory on cuts. This is the third straight fight to end on cuts. Scores had Mosley ahead 49-46 and 48-47 twice at the time of stoppage.

Summary: Both guys in top shape. Judah, known for being a frontrunner, lived up to his reputation and got off to a great start. Brown got untracked in round five and nearly had Judah on the canvas in the 6th. Judah righted his ship in the 7th and edged the next few rounds ever so closely. Judah easily won the 10th and for once, it was a late rally that won Zab Judah a decision. Scores were 98-92, 97-94, 96-94 for Judah.

Joe Calzaghe vs. Andre Dirrell, 10 rounds, 168 pounds
Summary: Both fighters in top shape. Calzaghe overwhelmed Dirrell from the opening bell, dropping him for the full ten count in the 4th after a brutal hook to the head. Easy work for Joe.

Summary: Both guys in peak condition. Johnson took the opening round, but Qawi hit him with everything but the kitchen sink in the 2nd and 3rd. Johnson was just sort of unable to pull the trigger and Qawi had everything going his way. Qawi just never struggled and even put the iron chinned Johnson on the canvas late in round nine. Knowing how badly behind he was, Johnson went for something big in the 10th but only narrowly won the round. Qawi wins via scores of 99-89 and 98-90 twice.

Summary: Both guys in tremendous shape. The fight was tactical early, with Winky compiling a good lead. Then the fight morphed into a bloodbath of a war midway through and Vargas began landing with eerie regularity. Vargas opened up a bad cut in the 6th and from there he dominated. The cut was above an eye and in the 8th, Vargas opened it up badly again, and this time the doctor recommended a stoppage and that was the ballgame. The scores had Winky wildly ahead, 79-73 and 78-74 twice, at the time of the stoppage.

Junior Jones vs. Wilfredo Gomez, 12 rounds, 122 pounds
Summary: Both fighters in tip-top shape. Gomez jumped out of the gates quickly, putting Jones on the canvas in the 2nd with a flash knockdown. Jones responded with a big 3rd round and the two traded pretty evenly in the 4th. Gomez wobbled Jones in the 5th and Poison lost a point in the 6th for hitting on the break after being warned earlier in the bout. Otherwise, the 6th was a big round for Jones. Jones continued a bit of dominance into the 7th round, outfighting Gomez in close. Wayne Kelly had to warn Gomez for rabbit punching in the 8th. Gomez continued his momentum into the championship rounds until Jones stalled him with a big 11th. Jones went for the home run in the 12th and outmanned Gomez to take the round. The bout went to the cards where one judge had it 113-113, which was overruled by 116-110 and 115-111 scores in favor of...Wilfredo Gomez!

Julio Cesar Green vs. Felix Sturm, 12 rounds, 160 pounds
Summary: Both fighters in top shape. Was a solid back-and-forth affair, and halfway through you could argue it was a draw or one point either way. Sturm won the rounds that were low on action, the rounds that featured more offense leaned towards Green. Green had Sturm badly wobbled in the 7th and Sturm's knee nearly touched the canvas. Sturm responded with a monster 8th round. The two fighters pretty much split the remaining rounds. One judge had it 114-114, which was overruled by two 115-113 cards in favor of...Felix Sturm!

Jesse James Leija vs. Rafael Limon, 12 rounds, 130 pounds
Summary: Leija came in great shape while Limon was a bit heavier than he'd like to be. Another close fight, Leija came alive in the middle rounds to build a bit of a lead on the scorecards. Limon exploded with monstrous 8th and 9th rounds, staggering Leija around the ring. Leija won the 10th and fell behind early in the 11th before coming on late to steal the round. Limon took the 12th round easily. One judge had it 115-113 for Leija, one judge had it 114-114 even, and the third judge had it 114-114 even for a majority draw. This locks up at least a tie for Wolfgang.

Miguel Cotto vs. Timothy Bradley, 12 rounds, 140 pounds
Summary: Bradley was in top shape while Cotto came in a bit overtrained. Another well-matched fight, Cotto did great work to the body on the inside while Bradley worked behind his jab and did some of this own body work. Both fighters were warned early on for various dirty tactics; Cotto for low blows and Bradley for hitting behind the head. Bradley lost a point in round seven for a foul and that may have been the difference in the fight up until that point. Round 8 saw Cotto open up a cut underneath Bradley's right eye. Despite this, it was Bradley who came through big time in the 9th round as he dropped Cotto with a well-placed shot to the rib cage. The two split the remaining rounds, and it was the knockdown that proved the margin of victory. Bradley won 113-112 on two scorecards and 114-111 in the third, sealing up the win for Wolfgang.

Summary: Both fighters in awesome condition. Lewis got off to a great start, smashing Holyfield with monstrous power shots in the early going. Holyfield came on a bit in the middle rounds as he jabbed and grabbed his way to a foothold on the scorecards. Lewis turned the tide in the 9th and didn't give up another round until the 13th, which was still rather close. If there was any doubt in the scoring of the fight, that went away in the 15th as Lewis deposited Holyfield on his ass not once, not twice, but three times. Holyfield, to his credit, got up each time, but lost on the cards via 145-136 twice and 144-137.

Summary: Both fighters with impressive physiques. Mosley took his time to begin and then quickly opened up a bad gash above the left eye of Katsidis and doesn't look good for the Aussie. Katsidis knows the situation and decides to go for it and actually finds success landing some heavy thudding shots in rounds three and four. Round five was one for the ages as both guys got in their share of quality licks. The cut was above an eye and in the 8th, Vargas opened it up badly again, and this time the doctor recommended a stoppage and that was the ballgame. The scores had Winky wildly ahead, 79-73 and 78-74 twice, at the time of the stoppage.

Summary: Bradley was in top shape while Cotto came in a bit overtrained.
